About the event
Writing to Heal: Young Breast Cancer At-Home Writing Retreat
With April Johnson Stearns, Founder of WILDFIRE Magazine
created exclusively for the You Can Thrive
This 2-hour workshop will be a mix of writing prompts and writing instruction with the goal to help the participants establish a personal writing practice that will ultimately lead to healing via writing their breast cancer memoirs (whether it is a short piece such as a blog post, a longer style writing such a book, or something they adapt for an oral presentation such as a Tedx talk).
Give yourself the gift of writing in a community of others who understand not only being diagnosed with breast cancer, but also being diagnosed younger than the average age. “I'm not a writer.” “This story has already been told.” “No one wants another breast cancer story.” – Are these the thoughts going through your head? Come anyway. You have an important story to tell, even if you don't think you're a writer. This workshop will provide tricks and tips for translating your story to the page.
We'll gather together from the comfort of our own homes for the purpose of writing in a safe and understanding community. No writing experience necessary, this workshop is for all levels of writers and non-writers who want an environment in which to practice. We will discuss strategies for accessing and writing personal stories, particularly related to traumatic and difficult life events, such as a cancer diagnosis, as well as practice writing via prompts. Participants will also have the opportunity to share their writing if they so desire. There will be no critics, only listening. No pressure to share. We'll also discuss how to establish a writing practice beyond the workshop as well as different places to get published, in case that is of interest.
Led by April Johnson Stearns, a life-long writer and the editor & founder of WILDFIRE Magazine.
Note: this workshop is for the purpose of creating new, original pieces & is not designed to be an editing session.
