Detoxify Your Skin with Dry Brushing

May 14, 2014

The Importance of Dry Brushing

We tend to our faces daily (cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing), but what about the rest of your skin? Your skin is the largest organ in the body and it supports the detoxification process. However, if your skin is filled with toxins and covered in dead skin cells, it can halt proper detoxification. Dry brushing can not only improve the appearance of your skin, but also provide whole body benefits (Mercola). Dry brushing can stimulate and support your lymphatic system, exfoliate your skin and provide cell renewal, increase circulation and reduce cellulite (Mercola & McFarland).

The Brush

Picking the right brush for dry brushing is essential. The brush should have soft, natural bristles with a slight stiffness. The brush should only cost 8-10 dollars (HP & McFarland).

How Often Should I Dry Brush?

Dry brushing opens your pores and can be done daily, even twice daily if you prefer. It should only take a few minutes (HP & Sutherland).

How to Dry Brush Your Skin

Start with a clean, dry brush; do not wet it. It is best to do it before you shower. Brush in gentle, circular strokes towards your heart. Start with your hands and feet and move inward towards your abdomen. Pass the brush once over your entire body, except your face. Do not dry brush over any open wounds, cuts, or rashes. One whole dry brush session should last no longer than 5 minutes. Your skin may slightly flush, but it should not be red. If your skin is red, you are brushing too hard (HP, Sutherland) & McFarland).

After Care

Following your dry brushing session, it’s best to shower and wash away the toxins. After you shower, apply jojoba or coconut oil to moisturize the skin. Also clean your brush well in preparation for your next dry brushing session. For the best results, dry brush at least once a day for 30 consecutive days (Sutherland).
